The Shortcomings of the National Geographic Society

Submitted to the American University in Cairo.
The national geographic society is located on el kasr el Eini Street in the shura council compound. The architecture of the building is marvelous as it was built in the time of the monarchy .the building's European style is what gives the national geographic society its beauty. The appearance of the building is run down due to environmental damage. The building internally consists of two floors. The first floor is divided into two halls, which are the "ethnography museum", and the "costumes and traditions" hall. Each hall is divided into smaller rooms. The second floor consists of a library and a debate room. The purpose of the society is to improve the study of geography in Egypt. The national Geographic society needs some improvements to fully achieve its purpose such as: advertising, organization and presentation.
In order to fully achieve the purpose of the museum, an advertising campaign is necessary. Advertising and promotion will help the museum attract more visitors and researchers thus improving the study of geography in Egypt. Hiring and advertising agency is the best choice for starting a campaign . Advertising can be done through : radio, television ,billboards and even flyers to introduce the idea that a national geographic society even exists .This will cause the word-of-mouth phenomenon to occur, consequently , receiving more visitors. Advertising for the lectures which are held in the debate room can be done through email to the students or researchers interested in anthropology and geography.
That THE museum is in critical need of promotion was obvious from the empty halls and rooms. Apart from AUC freshman writing program students, and a few academic scholars, the museum was empty. If the museum is going succeed in promoting the study of geography in Egypt, it must launch a publicity campaign which would, at least inform the public of its existence.
