The Prince

Machiavelli wrote The Prince as a means to express how he believed one could acquire and maintain power. In it, he describes the manner in which his "Prince" should appropriately govern as well as the faults and mistakes of previous rulers. Machiavelli notes that it does not matter much how a Prince comes into his power, whether newly hereditary or newly conquered Princedoms. He does, in fact, express that it is significant for a Prince to be capable of upholding power. For this to keep true, it is vital for a Prince to possess unique qualities.
Machiavelli stresses that a Prince must be wise if nothing else. He must be aware be aware of everything and everyone one around him. This is critical for a Prince to keep control over his people as shown with Machiavelli's words, " a wise Prince should devise means whereby his subjects may at all times, whether favourable or adverse, feel the need of the State and of him- A prince need also be ready and prepared to change himself according to his current situation because he must do his best not to be hated. "He must therefore keep his mind ready to shift as the winds and tides of Fortune turn- Machiavelli believes that a Prince should not be completely good or completely evil, but should be good when he needs to be and evil when he needs to be. "It is essential, therefore, for a Prince who desires to maintain his position, to have learned how to be other than good, and to use or not to use his goodness as necessity requires." .
Another quality the Prince needs to always have war on his mind. Machiavelli believes that territories that could pose a threat should be attacked beforehand or they, themselves, could attack. "A Prince, therefore, should have no care or thought but for war, and for the regulations and training it requires." When a Prince succumbs to his own vices and pleasures he will become weak and lose his dominions.
