A Helping Hand

At the moment, I felt that I had done my job as a volunteer. Also, there was a time when I was assigned to the neonatal intensive care unit, which is where newborn babies that are in critical care are kept. In the NICU, I would record the weights of the babied, check their heart rate, or see which supplement they needed. I enjoyed being in NICU because I worked next to the nurses. Constantly the nurses would call on me to do something for them and that is why I felt that there was never a dull moment. While working in various departments in the hospital, I gained knowledge of several things. For one thing, I acquired the skill of communicating with people in a composed manner. By this I mean that I become polite and sincere when I spoke to the patients and the visitors. The reason that I point this out is the hospital environment is usually critical, so the volunteer and employees are to be cautious of what they say. In other words, there is certain information about the patient that the family may not know or the condition of the patient may be so severe that the doctor may feel that it is better if nothing is said. In instances like this, it is far better to keep patient information withheld from others. Ordinarily, I would speak my mind, but I learned that the patients were in a serious condition and that I should converse earnestly. Another thing that I learned was patience. I was the type of person who was hasty and like to do my assigned tasks rapidly, while volunteering at St. Francis; I had to wait for the charts to be completed before I could input data into the computer. Sometime the charts would take a few hours to be finished, so I would sit tolerantly and wait. Also, I learned how to adapt too other situations. For instance, there were times when I had to take on the role of secretary or even comfort people in delicate situations. When a twelve-year-old mother confided in me, I automatically became confidant.
