Hardships In Night

The Holocaust is a terrifying event in which Elie Wiesel faces during his lifetime. Night is a memoir written by Elie Wiesel of Hungary. Elie Wiesel undergoes many hardships. He also deals with these hardships in different ways than the ways in which we would deal with them. There are many interesting overall effects on the book as well. Elie Wiesel manages to survive the hardships of the Holocaust, but not without changes in him and effect on the overall book.
Elie faces many hardships during his years at the concentration camps. For one, Elie is separated from his mother and sisters. To add to this, his father dies later in the book. This example shows that Elie no longer has any family and has no place to turn in life. Elie faces another hardship when he is put to work on numerous tasks, without an adequate amount of food in his stomach. His physical condition is destroyed because his body becomes thin and he injures his foot. This makes it harder for Elie to do the required jobs of the concentration camps. Elie is forced to bear the sights of many deaths, yet another example of a hardship he faces. Not only does his family die, but friends from his home and relatives also die. An example would be when Stein of Antwerp comes to ask Elie of the condition of his wife and sons. Elie makes up a lie that gives Stein hope when there really isn't. This example illustrates how Elie is only trying to protect Stein from the truth, when really it's just making it worse. This leads Elie away from God. Without God, the hardships are even more difficult because he must now face them alone.
These hardships Elie faces induce change in him in a number of ways. One of the ways in which Elie is altered is how he views life. He sees more deaths in a few years than we"ll witness in a lifetime. The most appalling thing though, is that Elie is not upset at all by the many deaths he sees through these very demanding years.
