Affirmative Action

If I do nothing else today, I hope to present you with a few facts about affirmative action that will definately change some opinions. An attempt to rectify our past problems which ends up creating even more injustices is simply ludicris. Affirmative action is a simple solution to a not so simple problem.
Martin Luther King Jr. once said "I have a dream that one day my children will live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." That was over 40 years ago, and many would say we've accomplished this, or atleast have come a lot closer. However, in reality, especially in the case of college admissions, the race based judgement has simply went from negative to possitive. Instead of minorities being treated poorly because of the color of their skin, they are given unfair benefits for the same reason. However, King and his supporters wanted equallity, not benefits. To give minorities an advantage goes agaisnt everything the civil rights leaders wanted and strived for. Affirmative action is out demeaning to minorities, its telling them they can't do it by themselves, on an equal playing field. .
Secondly, affirmative action is no longer neccesary. It was created in the 1960s to counter racism. But we've come so far as a society since then and racism is no where near as common as it was then. But, when racism does play into the equation, we cant handle those rare cases through courts, not a nation wide program.
And lastly, affirmative action unfairly discriminates agaisnt caucasian people. Many colleges try to bump minorities up to the level of a qualified caucasian man, but what happens when they go too far?.
For example, at the University of Michigan, they ive you 3 points for a perfect essay and 12 points for a perfect ACT score, out of a possible 150. But being a minority gets you an extra 20 points. Just for the color of your skin.
