             Within our local Diocese, with which I am most familiar, we have seven elementary schools labeled as "Financially Disadvantaged Schools". These schools serve most of our minority students and are generally located in economically depressed areas of the city. They receive financial aid support or subsidies from the Diocese. .
             In these schools the majority of the teachers are from a totally different cultural background than the students. What should happen?.
             The Diocese should take a proactive approach in enabling these teachers to better serve the incoming student population.
             In the future, significant changes in teaching diverse learners should take place in a manner that reflects positively on elementary education in general and Catholic Education in particular.
             The goal of multiculturalism is being able to recognize the diversity and cultural differences that exist in our schools and to respond to these .

             This is of great importance in this day and age because we are a culturally diverse society. It would be beneficial as a Catholic educator.
             and administrator to see our Catholic teachers receive more professional development on how to integrate or incorporate more multicultural education into their curriculum in hopes of encouraging positive acceptance. It must be a part of the total school vision to improve their efforts in this area. Such efforts require a great deal of planning and evaluation.
             The teachers should expose the students to new and challenging information to acquire early mastery of basic skills.
             Many cultures have many different mores and folkways. Teachers must be open to what the students are doing and find out why they do what they do. This openness will create communication in the class, which will ultimately develop into a classroom that is learning, understanding, and culturally fluent.
