             During his campaign against Richard Nixon, democracy in the United States was changed as the American public gained more insight into politics. This was due to the first ever live television debates. Kennedy won the election a mere 12 thousand votes. More than 70 million votes were cast that November. .
             Robert Frost wrote a poem specifically to read at Kennedy's inauguration called "Dedication." Frost was in his eighties at the time, there was a strong wind, and the sun was reflecting off of newly fallen snow (Mills 193). He decided to recite a poem from memory called "The Gift Outright." "The Gift Outright" starts "The land was ours before we were the land's. / She was our land more than a hundred years before we were her people.".
             Kennedy's inauguration speech explained his New Frontier program. It also included the famous quote, "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." Kennedy's basic plan for his presidency included cutting taxes, increasing the funding for the space program and taking action on civil rights (Mills). .
             New affairs arose shortly after his term began. The cold war was at its height, Kennedy wanted to eradicate communism and he was especially concerned about Cuba. On April 17, 1961, the invasion at the Bay of Pigs took place. The plan for this invasion was created by Kennedy and backed by the CIA, they had Cubans opposed to Castro invade Cuba and try to overthrow Castro. The invasion failed because Castro's army was underestimated. Many other problems including The Berlin Wall, The Cuban Missile Crisis and The Vietnam War all began early in Kennedy's term. .
             President Kennedy was planning for the election of 1964. His major obstacle was a feud between the governor of Texas, John Connally, and Senator Ralph Yarborough. Kennedy decided to go on a tour of Texas with both democrats.
