The Metamorphosis-Research Paper

He does not like to think about his family having to work. .
Kafka also discusses the enslavement of modern man to the forces of materialism. By turning Gregor into a bug he is able to watch his family from a different perspective. With this, Kafka can show one's worry with financial security. Before Gregor's transformation, he is miserable at his job, but he cannot quit since he is the sole source of income for the Samsa family. Nothing at work satisfies him, and his boss treats him worse than an animal, almost like a bug. Unfortunately, Gregor does not have the courage to go out and find something better; he accepts his miserable existence in order to have financial security. He knows his co-workers do not like him and just use him for his hard work. "Why was only Gregor condemned to work for a firm where at the slightest omission they immediately suspected the worst?" (Kafka 9) Then his transformation occurs; he literally becomes an insect, the lowest form of life. Representatively, Kafka is representing the level to which a human being can be reduced in the modern world. It also indicates to what point a man sometimes sinks before he begins to reflect on the meaning of his existence. Almost mockingly though, it is only as an insect that Gregor can find the time or motivation to reflect on his own unhappiness, to acknowledge his own desire, and to see the selfishness of his family.
There is a definite change in Gregor's sister, Grete. Before his metamorphosis, the two of them were astonishingly close. He was even saving money out of his small earnings so he could send her to a music school to learn how to play the violin. It is obvious that they care deeply for each other. When Gregor goes through his change, she primarily seems to accept the metamorphosis and is wonderfully supportive and considerate of him. Grete was the one who makes sure that Gregor had food and drink. Grete would also open the door slowly and carefully and tiptoe her way into Gregor's room in such a way to make sure she did not frighten him.
