After Margaret died, Malachy and Angela decided to move to Ireland from New York. The transition was hard because they had no money. Once they arrived in Ireland they went to stay at Malachy's mother and father's house. After awhile, they decided to get their own place, so they all took a train to Dublin. When they were in Dublin, Malachy went to the IRA to see if he might be able to get some money since he did his bit for Ireland. The man in the IRA office said that he couldn't find a Malachy McCourt in any of his records. He left the place with no money and walked back to the train station where his family was eagerly waiting. Malachy told them there was no money. They met a police officer at the train station, and he said they could spend the night at the police station. .
The next day they left the station and went to see Angela's mom. Angela's family didn't accept Malachy because he came from the north, and he drank all of the family's wages. Angela's mother got them a small place not too far away from her own house. They lived there for awhile not having too many problems, except for the fleas. Oliver, Frank's little brother died in that place, so Angela decided to move again because she didn't want to have the memory of Oliver death in that place. Eugene, Oliver's twin brother took this very hard, and that is another reason why they moved. The next place they lived in was a little bit bigger but not much. Soon after the move Eugene died also. The McCourt family moved yet again. By now Angela and Malachy are very depressed because the are only left with two of the original five children they had. .
At one point, Frank had typhoid fever and he was hospitalized. While in the hospital, he was in a room next to a young girl named Patricia. They talked as much as they could and recited poems to each other. Their communication was cut off by Sister Rita because patients shouldn't be talking to each other they should be praying they are still alive.
