Change is Difficult

The writers of "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas" and the producers of the movie Witness suggest change as the greatest threat to their sound communities. Both of the stories involved clicks or groups of people that are stubborn minded when it comes to change. In the world today people will wait until the last minute or until somebody forces them to change. Both of these stories are a perfect example that citizens will do almost anything to avoid change. Humans grow accustom to tradition and repetition and are not comfortable with change.
In the short story "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas" their entire culture revolves around one neglected child. The city of Omelas is compared to a heaven on earth. All the wealth and all the riches are mixed into this town. The citizens do as they want with experimentation of drugs and sex. In order for everyone to prolong the unprotected sex and drug use depends solely on the disparity of a child within the community. The child is locked in a small dark room at the bottom of one of the buildings in the town. All of the citizens from Omelas are allowed to go visit the child, yet most choose not to. The citizens that do visit the child leave with great anger, they know that this is wrong and that it needs to be stopped. The visitors know if they decide to bring the child home with them the heaven on earth will be over. The greatest threat to the city of Omelas is change. Though many people are willing to sacrifice the child's suffering they still decide to keep their happiness.
In the movie Witness change is also the greatest threat to their community. The Omnish have their own community just the way they want. When outside influences encroach upon the citizens most are very uncomfortable. A man from the city unwillingly joined the Omnish community, and that is when the change started to occur. The love interest this man has with an Omnish girl only brings more drama into their small town.
