My Childhood Hero

My grandmother was only sixty-two years old when her life came to an end. She led the life equivalent to ten people, and enjoyed every minute of it. Because of her heart of gold and her ability to overcome life's toughest obstacles, she helped mold me into the person that I am today. She was and always will be, one of the most important people of my life. .
My grandmother became pregnant with her first child at the young age of seventeen. After she conceived Donna, my aunt, she and my grandfather decided to get married. Four years after they got married along came my mother, Angie. The four of them had a rough life, money was tight and things didn't always go the way they had planned. They pulled together as a family and did the best that they could do.
In 1977 she and my grandfather opened up a small family owned carpet store right outside of town. When things were first getting started, the two of them did everything by themselves. You would have to know my grandmother to appreciate this, but she was only about a hundred pounds soaking wet, yet she did everything from loading and unloading trucks, to rolling and laying the carpet, with the help of my grandfather of course.
I came into the picture in 1979, and was the second of three granddaughters. Five years after I was born she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She went through twenty-six reconstructive surgeries over a period of two years. Nobody in my family had the stomach to change her bandages after a surgery, except me. I was only six at the time, but I made sure I changed her bandages everyday. When she was able to start moving around again, she came through the house one day; I had all of my dolls lined up in the floor with bandages on all the places that my grandmother had on her. If she were still alive she would still be telling that story I am sure. .
She and my grandfather divorced when I was around twelve years old.
