             By 1858, Rockefeller was taking on more responsibilities with the company. He would arrange complicated freight transportation deals (this would be a dispatcher is in today's transportation industry, or a freight coordinator). .
             Rockefeller went into business with his neighbor, Maurice Clark, on March 18, 1859. They became Rockefeller & Clark, merchants in grain, hay, meats, and miscellaneous wares. (I believe this is called a broker today). By the end of the first year they had grossed $450,000 with a profit of $4400, and at the end of the second year, the profit was $17,000. It was not long before Rockefeller could see that the opportunities of the merchant business were limited.
             The Oil Refining Years.
             In February of 1865, Rockefeller bought out the Clark brothers of the Andrew, Clark, & Company for $72,500 and gained complete control of the company. In 1866, John Rockefeller brought his brother, William Rockefeller into the partnership and they formed another refinery company called the Standard Works and then began to export oil from a New York based office. Some of the commodities from refining kerosene were gasoline, petrolatum, Benzine, paraffin, white petrolatum (which later became known as Vaseline, and Naphtha.
             In January of 1870, John D. Rockefeller, William Rockefeller, Henry Flagler, Samuel Andrews, Stephen Harkness, and O.B.Jennings founded the Standard Oil Company. Rockefeller and Standard began merging with several other companies in order to expand the business.
             1872 Jabez Bostwick joined Standard along with his oil facilities both on Long Island and on New York Harbor.
             1873 The Devoe Manufacturing Company merged bringing in their distribution system to Kentucky.
             1874 Standard begins building its own pipeline. This was met with major opposition from the Teamsters as they knew it would be cheaper to send the crude oil through the pipeline then it would be to ship it by wagon in barrels.
