Pride and Prejudice - Importance of marriage

The business of her life was to get her daughters married. Her daughters finding husbands was most important in her life as this would mean their financial security and also provides social status. Mrs Bennet was very involved in seeking husbands for her daughters and when Elizabeth turned down Mr Collins proposal, Mrs Bennet was very upset and angry that she had refused an opportunity to marry and was concerned that she may never have the chance again.
A prime example of a character who married purely for convenience and economic security was Charlotte Lucas. Early in the book we gain an understanding of Charlottes attitudes towards marriage in her conversation with Elizabeth. She believes that more affection should be shown than what a person feels in order to make a man form an attachment and that happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance . She also said, cit is better to know as little as possible of the defects of the person with whom you are to pass your life. Charlotte holds a very pragmatic and conventional view of marriage and is a prototype of a typical young woman in Austens time. Her friendliness to Mr Collins and her willingness to marry merely for financial reasons lead to their marriage. Charlotte was without independent income and therefore needed to marry in order to lead a comfortable lifestyle, and as she was already 27 years of age, she was not going to turn down Mr Collins proposal. Otherwise, she may not have had another opportunity to marry with the result of becoming an old maid. She believed she had as much chance of happiness with Mr Collins as with any other man.
Charlotte serves as a contrast to Elizabeth and her resolve to marry only for love. Elizabeth was willing to sacrifice being comfortably married in hopes of finding greater happiness by marrying someone who she actually loved. Ironically though, Elizabeth ends up with a marriage more financially advantageous than Charlottes.
