How is tension and dominance shown in the film Heat

The security guard is slightly off centre of the frame showing lesser importance to the incoming Val Kilmer. The security guard's focus is out of the actual shot, this lets Val quickly walk past him with no hassle. This is done by a quick camera sweep past the guard. This shows their helplessness and that the potential robber swept past the law enforcer with ease, with the officer oblivious to that fact that this man will happen in the near future. There is a sense of everything coming together by the way in which Val moves closer towards the camera. There are repeated cuts back to do Niro in CU. This is reminding the viewer of the authority of the character and that he is in control of the whole situation. The camera movement continues to track both de Niro and Val reminding the audience of the CCTV effect. The continued use of CU shots allows you to see the characters facial expressions and see the emotions they are going through during this tense and important scene.
When de Niro reaches the main office the camera swings around to reveal a big open space. This symbolises a door opening the way to the prize. Throughout the start of the scene there are several CU shots of de Niro, especially of his eyes which highlights his vigilance. His eyes are constantly moving around. This gives the audience the impression he is on the look out to make sure everything is in place. This helps the audience understand his character in more depth and suggests this man is a perfectionist.
Following this is the camera being is a fixed position where Tom Sizemore moves from the bottom left hand side of the camera into the centre. This character came from off screen and this is a way in which to introduce the character to the audience, along with the cuts back to de Niro (CU) it is another example of showing the viewer everything is running smoothly and no one else knows what will happen. As Tom moves forward, two other men walk towards the camera at a slight angle but Tom always stays centre frame to show his importance, even though these two men don't know he will soon be in control.
