American Growth Through Courage

The colors that represent this country and its people were acquired only through the courageous souls that came to this place with nothing and worked hard and overcame obstacles as well as the individuals that put their life second to the well being of the country and it's people. From the first settlers who came to Jamestown to the courageous immigrants who prayed to make it through Ellis Island, as well as the people I know in my own life, courage has showed what they are really made of and what they are truly capable of accomplishing. In American Literature we have covered many writings that show the courage of many individuals as they over come obstacles brought on by making this country their new home. Through out my life I have seen and been through many things that show what true courage is and what it can lead to. I feel that everyday I am reminded of what the word courage means to me and the way I live.
In the short story America and I the author Anzia Yezierska can be quoted as saying "If murders had robbed me and killed me it wouldn't have hurt me so much." The author of this story was obviously hurt and left very afraid by the harshness that the ways the new country she had come to live in. Even though she was scared and hurt by what had happened with her and the family that she worked for and ultimately never being paid for her work, she went on to find a new job. She found on and she soon found one that let her express herself and contribute what she was capable of doing to the country. I believe that this is true courage because despite her fear of something like what had happened to her happening again she went on a pressed forward and eventually her hard work had paid off for her and it helped her learn something about herself as well. Anzia's courage is what many immigrants who came to this country had to display, and by doing this it helped set standards for what was possible for a person to do if they simply remain strong and brave through hard times.
