             "In 1953 Elizabeth II became the Queen of England as Marilyn Monroe became the new queen of Hollywood- (Strasberg 1). Throughout her career, she became known as the most famous international sex symbol of the 20th century. She is important to the world of theater because her fame brought her much attention, as well as to others. She became acquaintances with many famous people, even President Kennedy, which all led up to her phenomenal fame in the U.S. Marilyn's life demonstrated the effects of her personal struggles "her insecurities about her acting and her image, her battle with depression, anxiety, addiction and sexism "as well as the triumph of her spirit, a part of her that continues to survive alongside her image as the legendary diva. .
             Marilyn Monroe was born as Norma Jean Mortenson on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California. She was delivered to foster parents, Albert and Ida Bolender. She Grew up living with several families during her childhood and, in 1935 at age nine, entered an orphanage where she lived until June 1937. When she grew up, she was beginning to understand why she had spent most of her time in orphanages. She wanted to get away from life in the orphanages and foster homes. She felt that one of her only escapes was to get married. Her first marriage was at the young age of 16. She was married to Jimmy Dougherty on June 19, 1942. Shortly after their marriage, her new husband was called to military service. There was a surplus of jobs since the men were at war, so she got a job at an airplane factory. The Army sent a photographer to take pictures of women helping with the war effort. The photographer was impressed with her looks and suggested she apply for a modeling position at the Blue Book model agency. She applied and was accepted. This began her modeling career. By 1946 she was on 33 magazine covers and was posing for top photographers.
