Bill Russel: A Hero for All


All the way up to his 10th grade year in high school when he finally made the basketball team." (Daniel, W.) Although it took much time for Bill Russell to achieve his goal of being in The Game he accomplished it, being able to hold his head high. .
             In the middle of Russell's high school years, he was not only doing well on the basketball court but on the track and field. Bill was the high jumper on the McCymonds track team. One of his best jumps was a near world record, six feet nine inches. It was amazing like his skills in basketball. Although he had reached his goal, he did not stop there. "Day by day his game improved until he could touch a spot on the back board, of fourteen feet, that was four more feet than him." (Daniel, W.) Both his basketball skills and academic earned Russell a scholarship to the University of San Fransisco. He graduated in 1952 from McClymonds, and during that summer he toured the Pacific Northwest with many other All - State Players. He was ready for his future, which now lay in the Liberal City of San Fransisco.
             As Bill began his college career he found college basketball to be much different from high school. But being the strong willed Bill Russell that he is, quickly he met the level. Although, San Francisco was a city of new ideas and ways of thinking, Bill still encountered his share of racial discrimination. Often times fans would criticize the coach for playing Bill in a game. But it seems, as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships rolled around the fan beliefs became pale. For it was purely Russell that led his team to the championship game. And it was Russell who made it possible for his team to win the NCAA championships in 1955. But it did not end just there. He was awarded the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) and he was honored. Bill worked his basketball magic once again in 1966 winning a total of two championships.
