Christianity and the Crusades

This is your dateline news reporter Clinton Lowery; reporting on an historical event story, featured on the date of 1093. It all started with the religion Christianity. The date of the religious beginning began between the time of the 1000's. I am reporting from the region of Western Europe. That was the time when a spiritual revival spread across Europe. It was led by monasteries. The reformers wanted to return to the Christian religion. The popes began to reform the Church. They expanded its power and authority. That was when a new age of religious feeling was born, called the Age of Faith.
At the time, problems were occurring in the church, but three main reasons were the most upsetting. One reason being was that many village priests married and had families. Marriages of those types were against church rulings. The second reason was because positions in the church were sold by bishops. It was a practice called simony. The last reason was because practicing lay investiture put kings in control of church but church reformers believed that bishops should be only appointed by the church. The conflict led to a reform with foundations of different monasteries. That led to a pope being appointed. The first was Pope Leo IX who took office in 1049. After the first pope came Pope Gregory VII who was elected pope in 1073, and Pope Urban II.
He sent an appeal to someone asking for help to take over the pope's capital, Constantinople. The pope issued for what he called a "holy war" which sparked a reign of battles. There were 4 total crusades in all. The first and second crusades were to fight against the "holy war". The third and fourth ones were to recapture Jerusalem. By that time crusades were common and most were unsuccessful. Then came the Spanish crusades against the Muslims and Jews because of the Reconquista. The effects of the crusade led to effects such as a weakened empire, declines in power, trade expansions in other cities and Europe and the Middle East.
