Finally, they do speak English and you cannot avoid it unless you decide to live in big Korean communities and never get out of there. So don't be afraid! Be active and learn how to speak English. As a college student in Korea, your vocabulary and grammar is enough to live in America, or even better than some Americans if you are a diligent student. Be brave! .
Get familiar with American culture. Most of you eat Korean food generally. But in order to order food at a restaurant, at least be familiar with popular American foods. If you are too lazy to do this, you might have difficulties to order food in a restaurant or on an airplane. Another way to get familiar with American culture is go to a social event in which a lot of Americans participate. It will give you a good grip of American culture and observe the things they do. Even though it might be brief, it will prepare you one step further to understand their culture. Another important thing to remember is to make some American friends. You will notice the enormous differences about attitudes on life, women, and seniors. Korean society is very homogeneous compared to American's. Koreans eat same food, think same, interact in same manners. In high school, you even have to wear the same kind and the same color of socks whatever your principal designates. If you don't go to college, you become the biggest loser in the world, and people treat you like you are the biggest failure in the world. If you marry while you are in college, you fall out of social circle because you marry too early. If you divorce, then people don't want to be your friend because you are divorced. You do not want to be different from other people because you can get a lot of trouble from being different. you do not even want to think different. It can be a sign of disaster for you to deal with from the moment Koreans notice. Unlike Korean society, American society accept that you can have different attitudes and opinions on things.
