Not an Average Clerk

Also, Sammy makes a joke at himself when confronting his manager by saying, "Fiddle-de-do," (347) a saying that is old-fashioned compared to Sammy's time. Finally, Sammy when quitting his job makes the side comment about his tie: "The bow tie is theirs, if you've ever wondered," (347). This is entertaining because he states it in the middle of his quitting scene. The random and unexpectedness of it makes it humorous.
Sammy's original descriptions of what he encounters shows his imagination. Sammy sees things in a more creative aspect than what most people view them. When describing the girls, he describes Queenie's shoulders and chest like "a dented sheet of metal tilted in the light," (345). This unique way of description would not have come from most people. Sammy also uniquely describes the A & P as well, "The whole store was like a pinball machine and I didn't know which tunnel they"d come out of," (346) when he is waiting for the girls to reappear. When Sammy hears Queenie talk for the first time his big imagination shines: "All of a sudden I slid right down her voice into her living room. Her father and the other men were standing around in ice-cream coats and bow ties and the women were in sandals picking up herring snacks on toothpicks off a big glass plate and they were all holding drinks the color of water with olives and sprigs of mint in them," (346). Sammy imagines Queenie's home life and social stature from only hearing her voice. When Lengel scolds the girls for being in the store in their bathing suits Sammy picks up on his repeating, "this ain't the beach." He imagines that Lengel is repeating this because "he had been thinking all these years the A & P was a great big sand dune and he was the head lifeguard," (346). Further, Sammy demonstrates his imagination when he names the girls, "Queenie and Plaid and Big Tall Goony Goony," (347). Most people would have referred to them as the blonde or the tall one but not Sammy.
