Lazirillo de Tormes

The blind man asked Lazarillo to bring his ear close to a stone bull. Lazarillo, ignorant and innocent, obeyed his master and as soon the blind felt the kid going close to the statue, he gave the boy a hard blow on his head and the boys head crashed against the bull. Then Lazarillo's master said, "You'll have to learn that a blind man's boy has got to be sharper than a needle!"(27) delivering Lazarillo's first lesson from his master. But Lazarillo learned more than what his master taught him from this experience. He realized that at that point of his life when he was alone, he had to be more careful and independent. .
With his masters Lazarillo did learn to be independent and careful but the path he was made to follow was the negative part of his education. Due to the miseries and hardships the poor little boy had to face during his stay with the blind man, Lazarillo learned to live by stealing and begging. Lazarillo also learned to fool people to get food and overcome his hunger. He learned that from his master who cheated people by acting like a holy man and gave false advises to earn money. The blind man made Lazarillo work but did not feed him well. Therefore following the footsteps of his master and taking advantage of his master's blindness, Lazarillo discovered ways to drink his share of wine and eat his share of food by fooling his master. Smart and shrewd, the blind man soon discovered Lazarillo's tricks and hence treated him even worse. Therefore, fed up of his master, Lazarillo one day left the blind man injured to look for another master. The last lesson he learned from his stay with the blind man was that if someone does not treat you well and does not respect you, then you should not care for him either. And therefore Lazarillo "never found out what happened to [the blind man] and [he] did not bother to inquire either"(37).
Due the various tasks the blind man made Lazarillo do, Lazarillo found a new master, a priest, who kept Lazarillo to serve the Mass.
