Pesticide Use: Good or Bad?

Pesticides are able to provide pest control, protection from disease, and protection of food and fiber.
Pesticide "use in and around the home is a routine part of modern living" (McEwen and Stephenson 60). Some insects and plants around the home can be destructive, so they must be controlled. "A number of insects, including the common and black carpet beetles, the webbing clothes moth, and the case making clothes moth, destroy fabrics of various kinds" (McEwen and Stephenson 61). These insects have the capability of becoming huge nuisances, which can easily grow out of hand without some form of control. Other pests, such as "moles, mice, rabbits, and pigeons and other birds may be a nuisance to the homeowner and at times destroy plants or impair the quality of the home environment" (McEwen and Stephenson 61). Fungi can also be harmful outdoors to plants, infecting flowers, vegetables, and fruits. All these nuisances can be controlled most effectively by the use of pesticides.
I see how my opponents can disagree with the use of pesticides in and around the home, because of potential health problems. But the effects of most pesticides on humans are minimal. Briggs, one of my opponents, even says that, "in many cases we have evidence of the effects only on certain species of mammals other than humans, while rarely do we have only human evidence" (10).
Another reason I support the use of pesticides is because they provide protection from many diseases. Diseases such as malaria and yellow fever have been controlled as a result of pesticide use (McEwen and Stephenson 21-27). These diseases are transmitted by insects. Before pesticides were introduced, diseases such as these caused widespread human fatalities around the world. Imagine how devastating it would be today if we had no way of controlling these disease-carrying insects.
There are those who believe not spraying pesticides is more important than controlling disease.
