Antigone

In Antigone by Sophocles, Creon the new king of Thebes, is stubborn and arrogant just like his brother in law Oedipus. Like very tragic hero, Creon eventually deteriorates. Creon's hubris eventually causes his downfall.
At the beginning of the play Creon is very direct to the towns people and senators. Creon states that anyone who buries Polynices will die. ".came back form exile intending to burn and destroy his fatherland and the gods of his fatherland, to drink the blood of his kin, to make them slaves- he is to have no burial, no mourning from anyone; it is forbidden. He is to be left unburied, left to be eaten by dogs, a horror for all to see."(pg 387/lines 163-168). Creon announces that he will bury Eteocles for gallantly fighting defending the city of Thebes ".I am determined that never, if I can help it, shall evil triumph over good. Alive or dead, the faithful servant of his country shall be rewarded." (pg.387/lines.169-172). During Creon's speech he states a few things that a person should do to be a good king. One of those things were that a good king should take advice from the townspeople.for my part, I have always held a view, and hold it still, that a king whose lips are sealed by fear, unwilling to seek advice is damned." (pg. 387/lines.140-165). .
As the play carries on, the Sentry brings news to Creon of a person that has buried Polynices. ".It's this sir. The corpse.someone has just buried it and gone. Dry dust over the body they scattered, in the manner of holy burial" (pg.388/lines.202-204). Creon starts to lose his temper and tells the Sentry that the perpetrator must be caught and brought to him or he shall be blamed for the crime. As Creon loses his temper because he has so much pride being king that how could anyone they can defy his edict. "Think what you will. But if you fail to find the doer of this deed, you"ll learn one thing: ill-gotten gain brings no one any good" (pg.
