Physical Abuse vs. Verbal Abuse

Everybody has suffered from both these types of violence. We recognize the pain from physical violence and the trauma from verbal violence. But we can never seem to distinguish which is worse. At first we"re tempted to say that physical violence is worse due to its direct effect it has on us, and its very noticeable visual distinction. Verbal violence on the other hand has a way of creeping up on us later in our lives by either by closing us off emotionally or making us mentally distraught. Verbal abuse can be much more damaging to us. .
Verbal abuse is the easiest and simplest form of violence one can use. It gets your point across and doesn't cause any visible harm to the other person. That's what we might think, but in actuality verbal abuse is one of the worst forms of violence there is, apart from being the most frequently used. The reason for this is because sometimes we don't even realize ourselves that we"re actually being given verbal abuse. That's when people take that opportunity to intensify the type of things they say making the abuse worse, and then becoming noticeable but only when it's too late and is extreme. This abuse starts affecting our self esteem and brings us down as an individual to a point where we think less of ourselves and in extreme cases, think about or even commit suicide.
Verbal abuse comes a lot into play in relationships. Relationships where one of the partners uses verbal abuse can become very damaging to the other person. The person abusing usually assumes the dominant role in the relationship, which suppresses the other person in the relationship into a passive position where they can feel insignificant and threatened if they dare stand up to their partner. This type of abuse leads to depression and causes the victim to even lose focus on reality. Unlike physical abuse where direct measures are taken to heal the victim, this type of abuse requires the special attention of a psychiatrist.
