CIA Kills al Qaeda's Second-In-Command

The United States scored another huge victory in the war against terrorism, after a US drone attack in the mountains of Pakistan's Waziristan area resulted in the death of Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, al Qaeda's second-in-command after Ayman al-Zawahri, who succeeded Osama bin Laden following his death. "It's been confirmed that al Qaeda's number two, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, was killed earlier this week in Waziristan, Pakistan," said a senior US Administration official (Hindustan Times). .
Following bin Laden's death, the CIA has continued conducting drone missile strikes over the mountainous areas of Pakistan. These campaigns are worsening the tension between the United States and Pakistan but have resulted in the deaths of several al Qaeda members. Because of their success, the US has expanded these attacks to include areas of Yemen and Somalia in the past few months. However, the CIA does not inform Pakistani officials of when the strikes will take place. After Rahman was killed, the US told Pakistan's government that he was the chief target of these attacks (Mazzetti). .
According to documents found in bin Laden's compound, Rahman was closely connected to the former leader, and had taken over as a top operational planner after his untimely death on May 2nd. The documents found in bin Laden's compound showed that Rahman communicated frequently with the deceased leader. He was the chief messenger between bin Laden and other al Qaeda leaders. The two leaders formed an agreement with Pakistan that they would not attack the country if Pakistan allowed al Qaeda leaders to hide in their country. However, the US has been unable to discover any trace of evidence that suggests this deal was communicated directly to Pakistani leaders or that Pakistan was aware than bin Laden was hiding in Abbottabad (Mazzetti). .
"Rahman's death is a tremendous loss for al Qaeda because Ayman al-Zawahiri was relying heavily on him to help guide and run the organization, especially since bin Laden's death," said the US official (Hindustan Times).
