The Myth of John F. Kennedy

This would be an important factor in building the myth of John F. Kennedy. Another important factor was his heroic effort in World War II. On August 2nd, 1943, the Japanese attacked the boat that Kennedy was on. While swimming to an island for safety, he also dragged one of his crewmates that had been badly burned during the attack. In the public eye, he was "young, wealthy, successful, handsome, charming, and a hero" (Greene 23). He was perfect for politics and was unlike any candidate America had ever seen for President.
             .
But what good did Kennedy do during his presidency that heightened the myth so much? John F. Kennedy did many good things during his presidency including a "commitment to the space race, the Peace Corps, and the Alliance for Progress" (Greene 34). He also helped to end the Cuban Missile Crisis by forcing Khrushchev, the leader of the Soviet Union, to dismantle their missiles after he enforced a naval blockade (Greene 35). But he also did things during his short tenure that showed me may be too young and immature for the Oval Office. Although he forced the Soviets out of Cuba, he still had the Bay of Pigs incident on his resume. Evidence also shows that he seemed to be keen on South Vietnam and "there is a case to be made that Kennedy had turned the corner on civil rights after Birmingham" but there is no way to tell if he could have got a bill that controversial through Congress (Greene 38). Also, many historians say that a lot of the actions he made during his presidency were aimed at helping him once he got reelected. Unfortunately, he never got the chance to be reelected. I am in no way trying to say that John F. Kennedy was an awful president during his time in office but I do believe the evidence shows he was not as extraordinary as everyone makes him out to be. .

The side of Kennedy that seems to be the most ignored is his social life outside of the office. I learned through readings and research that John F.
