Alienation in Richard Wright's 'Black Boy'

             Alienation from the process of laboring means that one has no control over their work and is unable to show any creativity. One has no control over how they work or under what conditions they work. They are solely under the control of the higher forces that they work for who make the workers work harder and faster for a longer period of time. In Black Boy when Wright was working for the optical industry, his boss promised him on the first day of the job that he would be able to learn how to work the machines that made the glasses. Wright couldn't believe what he was hearing because he never thought a colored boy would ever be allowed to have the opportunity to work with machinery like that. Every day he went in to work just waiting for his white coworkers to train him on the machines, but every day was a letdown. He finally asked the two white men one day if they were ever going to train him, and they got very upset for him talking to them. They did not want a colored boy to be able to do the same type of work as they did. They treated him very poorly, but Wright knew he could never tell the boss because of what the white men might do to him. He had no control over what he did in the work place and could never have a say in anything because he might get hurt. This did alienate him from his creativity and freedom in the work place by not allowing him to put his potential skills to work. .

             Alienation from human nature means that one's creativity is taken away and one is unable to shape the world around them. Wright was a very smart boy, always interested in learning something new. From a very young age he was asking his mother questions that a lot of six year old's don't think about asking. He never wanted to just believe something because someone said so. He wanted to know why. His family did not like him asking so many questions and once he started questioning Christianity, the whole family grew very hostile towards him.
