Rain of Gold and Angela's Ashes

The endings of Rain of Gold and Angela's Ashes both signify a sense of achievement and atonement. Both stories articulate the struggles of living in poverty while trying to migrate to the United States with the ambition of obtaining a better and more satisfying life. In order to truly understand the endings to both stories, one must evaluate the obstacles both families underwent to finally attain life in America. In Rain of Gold, Mexican families had dreams of a better life in America. Their lives were devastated by the Mexican Revolution, and their gold mines were taken from them. These events led to a life filled with struggle and freight. Keeping guard of the border were well-nourished American soldiers who were well dressed in exquisite uniforms. Mexicans in Rain of Gold could only dream of someday being well dressed and well fed. .
Following a life of struggle, bloodshed, and hard work, the families in Rain of Gold arrive in America. However, even in America Lupe's family still had to jump through hurdles and at first, life wasn't as effortless as they had previously hoped. For example, Lupe was unable to attend school for a while after coming to the United States. It is expressed in the book that Lupe loved to learn and it was one thing that she was most passionate about. After working in the fields she was then able to return to school. Despite their troubles, her family supported her love to learn and encouraged her to follow her dream of obtaining an education. Lupe aimed to attain an office job so that she would be able to support her family so that her parents no longer had to work in the fields. I believe that with the book's ending of "the beginning", a new chapter of life is commencing. Lupe and her family have accepted and put aside their past of struggle and are now focused on the magnificent life that is ahead of them in America with a feeling of achievement, satisfaction, and hope.
