Overview of Pennsylvania


Pennsylvania's total gross state product in 2010 was $570 billion, ranking it as 6th in the world. Banking, agriculture and manufacturing are the main sources of income for the state. .
             Manufacturing played a big role in the economy for the state in the earlier years of its development. In the early 1900's Pennsylvania provided 60% of the United States steel, by 1960 Pennsylvania only provided 24%. The Great Depression in the 1930's had the states unemployment rate at 37%. During the 1940's federal aid and the need for munitions manufacturing helped revitalize Pennsylvania in some areas. Manufacturing accounted for one million jobs in the 1990's, making it the second largest employer in Pennsylvania. Throughout the Untied States history Pennsylvania has been one of the main producers of ships, iron, chemicals, lumber, oil, textiles, glass, coal and steel. Pennsylvania is still one of the main manufacturing centers in the United States despite the decrease of productivity in the 20th century. .
             Pennsylvania is ranked 20th in the United States agricultural income in 2005. Some major crops produced include mushrooms, potatoes, other vegetables, strawberries, apples, pears, peaches, grapes and cherries. Today the fastest growing employment fields in Pennsylvania are the medical and health field (TCE 2012.) .
             Pennsylvania was originally home to the Delaware (Leni-Lenape), Susquehannock, Iroquois, Shawnee, and other Native American tribes. The Leni-Lenape (real men) were the most important of the several Algonkian Speaking tribes. .
             The settlement of the Europeans began to drive the Delaware tribe out of the Delaware river basin westward into Ohio. There are presently reservations in Oklahoma and Ontario. The Susquehannock's resided along the susquehanna river and were an Iriquoian speaking tribe. They perished as a nation in 1675 due to war and European diseases. The Shawnee were also an Algonkian speaking tribe who came from the west in the 1690's and settled near the lower Susquehanna.
