The Awakening by Kate Chopin

Subdued, whether it be intellectually, socially, sexually, or just an overall repression of the self, women living during the eighteenth century found their existence to be very confined. Subjugated by a society ruled by men who held them as subordinates, women were not allowed many freedoms. In her novel, The Awakening, Kate Chopin dares to break free from an oppressive society through her main character: Edna Pontellier. Edna challenges the very set of social rules that were abided by with strict precision by her predecessors. In the process of breaking out of the mold, Edna undergoes several awakening's that transform her from her previous shackled self to a new enlightened being who can think and act for herself.
One of the catalysts that served to spur Edna's need for change was the suffocating expectations that were placed upon her. Although typical mothers rejoice over bringing up their own, Edna Pontellier did not share the same satisfaction. She felt lost and desperate for change as motherhood drastically limited her options to do more in life. "Mrs. Pontellier was beginning to realize her position in the universe as a human being, and to recognize her relations as an individual to the world within and about her."(P13) To open up her mind and help prepare herself mentally for the transformation of herself Edna underwent her first awakening. The first of her "awakenings" is that of an intellectual sort. Typical women of that era were not normally thought to be the intellectual "type" rather one was expected to play the role of the subordinate; to tend to the home, care for the children, to sit and look pretty. Edna refused these duties she was expected to fulfill and rather sought to expose herself to more intellectually stimulating activities than sit and chat among her peers and chatter about frivolous and trivial matters. As she read "she did so with profound astonishment.
