The Importance of Napping

American's are busy people! And whether we know it or not, getting plenty of sleep is necessary.8 hours in a 24 hour period, but research has proven that the human body needs seven to nine hours of sleep per day.(Breus) Most American's are sleep deprived, causing the parasympathetic nervous system to kick into overdrive shortly after lunch by secreting digestive fluids. The overworking of the parasympathetic system causes the body to become fatigued. Many people call this "the afternoon slump". Sara Mednick, PhD, a sleep medicine researcher at the University of California at San Diego and author of "Take a Nap! Change Your Life!" supports this theory. Research studies on the effects of napping report that catching some extra "z's" ensures better psychological and physical health plus improved brain function (memory, accuracy, and overall "system recharge"). (Mednick) Some physical improvements are a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, migraine prevention and a decrease in stress levels.(Napping May Not Be Such a No-No).
Memory improvement is a benefit of napping. Toward mid-afternoon, there is a part of the brain that becomes "tired". According to researchers at Harvard University, when we're tired, our ability to memorize things is impaired. Research shows that, remarkably, even a short power nap boosts the brains ability to memorize. Subjects in a Harvard research sleep study gave a list of items to remember and were able to retain more upon waking from a short nap than before the nap. Many students spend hours studying, writing papers and preparing for exams, causing them to become extremely sleep deprived. Naps can help students reach peak performance during the academic year. (Napping May Not Be Such a No-No).
Midday napping can reduce the risk levels down of cardiovascular disease according to research. The researchers of Allegheny College in Pennsylvania observed two split groups totaling of 85 subjects.
