Alternative Energy for Tomorrow

About 10% of the US electricity was generated from renewable sources.
In India, there has been a steady increase in renewable energy capacity in the past one decade. Renewable grid capacity as a percentage of total installed power capacity in the country has increased by almost four times between 2002 and 2010, from 3% in April 2002 to nearly 11% as on 31st Jan 2011 (Ref Table 1).
Table 1: Break-up of installed power capacity (MW) in India as on 31.01.2011 |.
             Technology | Capacity Installed (MW) | Share (%) |.
             Thermal | 93,838 | 54.20 |.
             Hydro | 37,367 | 21.69 |.
             Renewable | 18,842 | 10.94 |.
             Gas | 17,456 | 10.13 |.
             Nuclear | 4780 | 2.77 |.

This significant growth in the renewable energy segment has largely been fueled by private sector participation. India is considered one of the most attractive destinations for renewable energy investment in the world, behind only the US, China, and Germany.
             Sources of Alternative Energy.
There are various alternative energy sources such as sun rays, wind, water, biomass, etc. which can provide us significant amount of energy. Other sources that are being tapped to produce energy are hydrogen "the most commonly found element on earth, heat trapped inside the earth, ocean tides, etc.
The following table captures the resource-wise steady growth in renewable energy capacity in the country over the last decade" (Ref Tab 2). Wind energy has been the major contributor with a share of about 70% in the total renewable capacity.
Table 2: Plan period wise capacity addition in grid connected renewable energy based power generation installed capacity |.
             Resources | Estimated Potential(MW) | Capacity Addition (MW) |.
