Although there are critics that associate television with children being less physically active, there are shows that promote physical play during the show. There are shows like "The Wiggles", which actively engage children to dance and sing throughout the show. "Barney" and "Sesame Street" have video clips about games that children can play outside. "Yo Gabba Gabba" invites children to dance around with them as they sing and dance during the show as well. Children respond to what they see and if they see the characters dancing and playing around, they are likely to do the same thing.
Negative Effects of Watching.
Children do not realize this, but watching too much television can have negative effects on them. These negative effects can have adverse impact on children immediately or in the future. .
Television Can Be Addictive.
If parents allow their children to watch television to past time and keep them entertained, watching televisions can be a start of an unhealthy habit. Because some children watch too much television, it can cut into their play time and lessen their physical activities. Some children will start to learn eating in front of a television as well. In the United states, 35% of children are overweight and hours spent of a television is associated with this (Shea, Harvey-Berino & Johnson, 2010). This habit can also lessen productivity, which can affect children when they start school. At times, they may choose to watch television rather than finishing their homework.
Television Producers Agenda .
Most television producers' goal is to turn a profit. In order to increase profitability, some producers create shows without any regard if the show positively or negatively influence a child. Television producers know that violence sells among children. Most children mimic what they watch and at times do not understand if they are copying something good or bad. In between these shows, they play commercial ads that can have a negative effect on children as well.
