Evidence of Courage


             Wells once said, "If you fell down yesterday, stand up today." Similarly, in Ray Bradbury's dystopian novel, "Fahrenheit 451", protagonist Guy Montag decides to put an end to the censorship of literature in his futuristic-society, where firemen punish anyone who is known to own a book. .
             Galileo Galilei stood up against the Catholic Church's doctrine with his scientific evidence, disputing that the world revolved around the sun as opposed to the Catholic perspective that "the world is firmly established, it cannot be moved." In a corrupt or unjust society, speaking and standing up for yourself and your beliefs is much more effective that keeping your thoughts and beliefs in your mind. .
             In Ray Bradbury's novel "Fahrenheit 451", Guy Montag is able to see the true depth and meaning that can be found in good literature, and realizes how wrong the government is their attempt to ban all books. Montag attempts to put a stop to the exorbitant censorship with his accomplice, Faber, an ex-English professor. .
             After serving as a fireman and blindly burning books for ten years, Montag meets his new neighbor, Clarisse McClellan, completely changing his perspective on the bland, day-to-day lives that people in their society live, that hold no meaning. Montag is opened up to the concept of independent thinking, and concocts a risky scheme with Faber in order to overthrow the status quo; Faber contacts a printer in order to being reproducing certain books and Montag will plant the books into the houses of firemen in order to discredit the profession and attempt to cease the censorship. His boss, Beatty, finds out about their scheme and Montag is unknowingly sent to burn down his own house; Montag later set Beatty on fire and fled his town to escape oppression. By breaking the social norm, Montag voiced his opinion and took action, in the end coming to the benefit of society as he discovers "the Book People", a group of people who memorize and preserve literature in order to prevent the medium from completely dying out.
