The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)

There are several reasons the Myers-Briggs type indicator instrument is used. The MBTI is a positive, nonthreatening framework for understanding behaviors; this could include both simple and complex aspects. There are hundreds of research studies that have been done on the MBTI and it has been used successfully across the globe. The MBTI is a tool used to define personality differences. Constructive use of individual contributions are important when problem solving; valued, respected, and all are necessary with none being greater than the other (Kirby, Kendall & Barger, 2006). .
             Introduction.
The framework of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is used to enhance awareness and the understanding of self and others. The framework used to understand personalities is called psychological type. This psychological type theory insinuates that there are consistent patterns in personality types and differences in people in a unique combination of 16 psychological types. With each scale having two dimensions and there being four scales that makes 16 different letter combinations. "The MBTI instrument was first developed in the 1940's by Katharine C. Cook Briggs in the U.S. Myers noticed a mismatch in the World War II with the task assigned to the soldiers and specific jobs. She thought an instrument used to measure personalities would help in assigning people to specific jobs. .
Later, joined by her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers, they expanded on Carl Jung's theory of the psychological types. Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist, started his theory on psychological type in part to understand the differences between his contemporaries, Freud and Adler" (Mattoon, 1981). (p.191). Jung believed Freud and Adler perceived the world differently. According to Mattoon, Jung believed Freud to be extraverted and Adler as introverted (Mattoon, 1981). Research shows that if Jung would have followed his own beliefs, he would have classified Adler as an extravert.
