Self-Assessment and Reflection

Dale Carnegie (1995) said, "Keep your mind open to change all the time. It is only by examining and reexamining your opinions and ideas can you progress" (p. 1). As I examine my past and look to my future, I know the better I understand my personal learning style, strengths and opportunities for growth, the easier it will be to develop a strategy for improvement. In other words, I need to ask myself, "Who am I and where am I going?".
I have experienced change in the workplace throughout my career. I have initiated some changes, while others have been out of my control. For example, I left my old job and company to join a new firm. In the past two years, as I grew into my position, I have worked with two different managers with two very different management styles. I have also been exposed to programming languages and operating systems that I had never used. It was by remaining open to change that I found myself leaving the company where I worked for nearly 20 years to pursue better opportunities. The question I asked myself during this job-hunting and soul-searching process was, "Will I adapt to change?".
I needed to determine if I would feel comfortable being thrown into a new job environment after so many years in my previous company. To do that, I had to examine how I learn. In What 4MAT Training Teaches Us About Staff Development, Bernice McCarthy (1985) describes four unique learning styles. .
"Type One Learners are innovative. They prefer to learn through a combination of feeling and watching. They are primarily interested in personal meaning. Their favorite question is Why?.
Type Two Learners are analytical. They prefer to learn through a combination of watching and thinking through concepts. They are primarily interested in facts as they lead to conceptual understanding.
