Reflections on

A Child Called It by David Pelzer is a truly shocking story. It chronicles the life of a boy, David, and his journey through an extremely abusive home. The book tells the story of how a healthy home turned into a living nightmare for David. I feel this book is excellent.
As young David tells the story of his life, the reader comes to understand that any home can become abusive when the right factors are present. David's parents had a healthy relationship before his mother started drinking habitually. The downward spiral started by alcoholism never stops through the whole book. David's life becomes more and more unbearable, unlivable even. His mother tries desperately to make David disappear from mind and sight. She tried unthinkable things to defeat David, but his spirit would not let go.
This book shows the true power of the human will to survive. I enjoyed reading this book greatly. I found myself disturbed but inspired by this entire book. The things that David went through were unimaginable to me. I have personally seen child abuse, but I have never imagined anything like this was possible. As a mother I find it so difficult to understand why David's mother acted as she did. I could never do anything like that to my child. I rejoiced when David was removed from the home and I knew he was safe. Even though this is a book, knowing that the story is true adds personal appeal for me. I enjoyed this book and I have already recommended it to my mother. .
