Attitude Formation

Classical Conditioning- When you see, hear, or smell something distinct and are motivated by that sense in one way or another, it is a prime example of classical conditioning. I found an advertisement for "Got 2b Spa" and immediately thought of this. The ad shows a good looking and healthy woman and a series of spa products and says in large type, "No Appointment Necessary." This generally grabs most people's attention mainly because people are impatient and seek instant gratification. They see that there is no waiting and no effort to make an appointment and are drawn in by that instinct. Something goes off inside of them that has been conditioned by social behavior and allows them to want to buy the product.
             2. Operant Conditioning- This was apparent in the "Grand Marnier" advertisement. People are conditioned to want to drink alcohol. It promotes having a good time and being socially adaptive to certain environments. There are consequences of drinking alcohol. The positive aspect is that it enables us to have a better time. The negative consequences, however, can make us sick until the point of death, or get us into trouble with the law. Depending on the consequences each individual have experienced, the stimuli that sparks our attention to the ad can be favorable or unfavorable. .
             3. Balance Theory- I assume in the balance theory there is one situation, and an effect present to balance out the situation. I used "Orbit" gum as my example. The type says, "Dirty Mouth? Clean it up with Orbit". This gives us a problem, and a way to fix it, using the product advertised. This is a balance.
             4. Cognitive Dissonance Theory- This advertisement was for McDonald's McGriddles. They are odd because of the ingredients used in the sandwiches. There are maple pancakes with egg and bacon and cheese inside. The ad says, "Weird. But a good kind of weird." It allows the customer to have conflicting thoughts about the product.
