Into Thin Air

He fully understands what is going on and it takes him a while to get over it. He is trying to push it down and also getting used to the idea of death at the same time. "The first body had left me badly shaken for several hours; the shock of encountering the second wore off almost immediately."" (Pg. 139) This demonstrates how Jon is finally realizing that it has affected him and he did keep going, but at the same time he is almost getting used to it. The second didn't nearly affect him as long because he is finally coming to the idea that there is a chance he is going to die even if he doesn't think it will happen to him. .
Personally, I believe repression is used by Gau in chapter 11. He displays no sadness for the loss of his friend, Chen, and decides to keep moving. He doesn't even think about it. His immediate response was "("O.K.,"" Gau replied. "Thank you for the information."" The assured his team the Chen's death would in now way affect their plans to leave for the summit at midnight."")- (Pg. 202) There wasn't even a sense that Gau was quiet for a minute after and just letting it sinks in. It doesn't seem like he is in the state of denial because, he seems to fully recognize that Chen is dead but still not affected the way he should be. I believe he is truly pushing his feelings aside for the time being. He probably is doing this to keep his clientele or just so he doesn't have to feel the pain to the full extent. .
"At that point Woodall declared, "Either you're a bloody liar or your Sherpa is."" Then he threatened to send over a couple of Sherpas from his team to "sort out- Ang Dorje with their fists."" (Pg. 164) This is an extreme representation of anger. Woodall wasn't happy with the situation at all and went completely off on Ang Dorie. This is how Woodall felt expressing himself would help or solve the problem. He was able to release his tension. There are very few examples throughout life that can better portray the anger shown here.
