The Hip-Hop Culture

A prominent culture I belong to is hip-hop, which is not simply a genre of music but a world-known culture. Hip-hop was created as a way of life, to be an outlet for expression, to uplift self-esteem, and give voice amongst a generation in this country. Hip-hop culture was developed in New York City in the 1970's mainly by African Americans, first emerging from The Bronx; the lifestyle of Hip-hop culture has now spread to urban and suburban communities worldwide. In hip-hop there is a unique style of how one speaks dresses, carries themselves, and many more that go along with the expression in the culture. The four historic elements of Hip-Hop are emceeing, DJ'ing, graffiti, and break dancing. The elements, unique style, and expression all are responsible for hip-hop's evolution and its strong cultural influence to the world.
I think hip-hop has broken down ethnic barriers and has built bridges between them. It has enormously become a fine unification for diverse populations of race. Hip-Hop prompted change and challenged the conservative system serving as a rebellion for the youth. Being used as a powerful voice in America, there were messages being delivered through songs that dwelled on uplifting the African American race and addressing problems that were against blacks as well. The youth found hip-hop to be a platform that allowed them to express the anger towards the system not being scared to say what's on their minds. .
I first got exposed to the culture of hip-hop when I was a kid, as my older brother would play music in the house all day. When I was in elementary and junior high, I would always listen to hip-hop on the radio and watch the music videos on television. Then I would go to school or go outside to hang out with my friends to debate who was a better rapper and why. Hip-hop culture is my inspiration. I find myself relating to the culture completely and I use it as my way of life as well.
