Suicide and the Incarcerated

Given that information, it is quite clear that such environments for inmates are not well suited for them thus risking them to such mental illnesses. When entering prison for the first time, it is natural for an inmate to start feeling uncomfortable and possibly depressed because they are not used to the new environment. Proper management of the prison environment is one of the main keys to preventing any suicidal act.
A book written by the authors, Virginia Hutchinson, Kristin Keller and Thomas Reid called, "Inmate Behavior Management: The Key to a Safe and Secure Jail," proposes a plan called "Inmate Behavior Management Plan" "(IBMP), in which it focuses on two major areas. The first area in which the IBMP concentrates on is proper supervision of staff and inmates and the second area is in the arrangement of an inmates life in prison. Providing this plan to inmates in correctional facilities reduces the risk of inmates attempting or completing suicide in the prison environment. The IBMP consist of six key elements that gives inmates positive behavior and they are the following: "Assessing the risks and needs of each inmate at various points during his or her detention, Assigning inmates to housing, Meeting inmates' basic needs, Defining and conveying expectations for inmate behavior, Supervising inmates. Keeping inmates occupied with productive activities." This is a really great plan but it is not always effective as it just reduces the risk. Of course, implementing this plan requires adequate staff with sufficient knowledge and training of the plan. .
The administrative staff and custody staff also has been a factor to suicide and should be improved as well. (Daniel) Training all staff members within the facility who are dealing with suicide preventions is highly required. Daniel gives three topics to train for and they are: "identification of high-risk offenders; how to identify signs and symptoms of mental illness; and how to handle communication of intent.
