The Impact of Gene Therapy

If it is not placed correctly, there is a great possibility of risk that could damage the genetic make-up. This could be a dangerous situation for the patient causing severe consequences.
             Government/Federal Regulation.
Who should control the uses of gene therapy? Leave these matters into the hands of the US Food and Drug Administration or (FDA), and also The National Institute of Health (NIH). There are two different areas that study gene therapy. They are researched in both public and private sectors (Government). In the public sector, the FDA and NIH's approval is used for anything pursuing gene therapy protocol. Gene therapy experiments funded by the government are overseen by both national and local levels. These are the public and private sectors. .
In the public sector, government regulation of gene therapy is brought to the hands of the Director of the NIH. He/she will determine the approval of the proposal. The director's decisions are not just decided by their self. They are accompanied by the Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee RAC (Government). However, in the private sector, the NIH only has authority on certain federally funded research. If the companies are not federally funded they will have to send their proposal to the NIH to be reviewed. Whether the research is funded by the government or not, the FDA must review all cases dealing with the gene therapy of human patients (Government).
             Socioeconomic Impact.
The biggest debate over the economic issue is that gene therapy gives people the role of "God"." Many people believe that God made us a certain way. Whether we be healthy or not, we are who we are, and he has a reason for that. Gene therapy gives us the ability to change these unique traits. The understanding for gene therapy to cure diseases is clear, however, the understanding of changing genes of a baby that has nothing wrong with him/her is not clear. (Billman) .
Another issue with gene therapy in society would be how it is highly misused.
