I know that Thomas loves his children more than anything in this world. These are young children we are talking about Peter, all with bright futures ahead of them. Petra is a dedicated teacher and my two young, ever optimistic boys would all be severely affected with the "enemy of the people" claims. Petra would be fired as an educator based on her father's rash opinions for the citizens of this town and Morten and Ejlif would be harassed by fellow schoolmates for the hate of their parents. With the following events of the next few days, please understand that with the succeeding fallout to our family would kill Thomas and he would never forgive himself for his actions. Thomas does not so much listen to me when science backs his findings but, I being the caregiver and the sole person that holds this Stockmann household intact, I find it my duty to protect my family through difficult times. I know he truly has the city at heart and feels it is his obligation as a doctor to prevent the spread of illness. However, he holds higher importance for his integrity and it is not because he wishes to ruin the town but in fact "the native town is so dear to [him] that [he] would rather ruin it than see it flourishing upon a lie" (229).
