Joel faces a number of barriers such as poor living conditions, a mother who is mentally unstable whilst being subjected to a large amount of domestic violence. Toilet training is an important life event for a child of Joel's age, however this will not be met growing up in such a volatile house. High levels of tension and nerves will not create a calm relaxed environment for Joel to learn these skills. .
             Case Study - Connie.
             Early Adolescence (12- 18 months) .
             Connie is in the most critical developmental stage, it is paramount that she feels nurtured and cared for at all times. Failure to meet what Piaget believes to be "a rapid time of growth, were children acquire the ability to think, reason and understand the world" (Slee, 2002 p141) could result in Connie growing up to be much like her mother.
             Piaget claims that infants use a sensory system to help obtain knowledge about the world. Piaget argues "children's knowledge about the world results from their interaction with the world." (Slee 2002 p 142) If Connie continues to be cared for by her grandparents in an environment with domestic violence Connie will be exposed to major complications as a young lady, this could also go on to effect her adulthood. .
             Case Study - Jack.
             Young Adulthood (19-40 years).
             Jack is nearing the end of his young adulthood. Intimacy vs. Isolation are important events for Jack at this developmental stage. It is evident that Jack has is not engaging in a loving relationship with a partner or his family. Jack is pushing away family members, which in turn will result in loneliness and isolation. Jacks repeated drug use is clearly a way for him to escape from reality. Erickson has stated that "success leads to strong relationships, while failure results in loneliness and isolation" (Erikson, class handout) Jack is isolating himself from his family through excessive drug use, quiet often these feelings turn in to depression, leaving the victim in a darker place.
