Beowulf - The Characteristics of a Hero

When you think of hero characteristics what comes to mind? Some may say; being brave, strong, loyal, and protective defines a hero, and some may say otherwise. I say all of these things not only make a hero but they make an epic hero. A great example is Beowulf, he's a perfect fit for an epic hero. Beowulf shows himself being loyal in the very beginning of this story. He shows this characteristic by going to king Hrothgar and offering basically his life to get rid of the terrifying monster; Grendel. He feels that being loyal to the king is what needs to be done for his father. As the story continues Beowulf ends up being loyal to the Danish people and his own people. This epic hero not only shows loyalty but also shows bravery. If facing monsters and giants was easy then anyone would do it but not everyone is as brave as beowulf. To all of the Danish people and the Geats Beowulf is expected to be courageous and brave and he seems to never let any of these people down. Of course strength has to fit into his list of amazing qualities! Beowulf is the strongest man during this time and shows it in every battle he faces. He especially shows it in his fight with Grendel. What kind of hero doesn't have supernatural strength, certainly not Beowulf. .
So Beowulf is not only a hero, he is an epic hero. He displays every characteristic you think of when it comes to heros. Beowulf is definitely someone to feel protected with because he hasn't let anyone down. He is the most loyal, bravest, and strongest man on the planet.
