It's a Flat World After All by Thomas L. Friedman

Many distances and obstacles which once prevented the "third world" from developing have been squelched; not entirely, but with the advent of technology and the pace in which the world is growing, one can see a redefining of the global landscape. Power has shifted hands and this shift in power as well as information is imperative in the shaping of global affairs. Friedman's "It's a Flat World, After All," accurately depicts this technological revolution and is in my opinion, the most relevant to the current and the future of global affairs. Friedman makes it clear that knowledge and information is going to be transformative as it gets into the hands of every individual, no matter the country. This spread of information will be transformative for two groups, those who have just gained access to resources and those who have had access to them for years, who are used to being on top. Those who have just gained access to these resources are utilizing them to the fullest, on a grand scale. Fiber optic cables brought along with them opportunities for the countless bright minds in India, for example. "[India] produced people with quality and by quantity" but could not export their knowledge or skills (Friedman, p. 3).Being connected will alter where the power stands. The most valuable entrepreneurs, professors, engineers, and innovators are now coming from areas which could once not produce such citizens with much fervor. Excellence is coming out of countries which at one point exported little more than manufactured goods. Without a doubt there will be more power held by these individuals than conceivable just 15 years ago. Individuals with an internet connection can break down barriers, expose fraudulence, build empires, and reshape the planet without stepping foot from their country. The movers and shakers will not be confined any longer. Power that once only belonged to the hierarchs of politics or business now belongs to any individual with the drive and the balls to seize it.
