Name all of the female geniuses, for example Marie Curie. Now, name all of the male geniuses, such as Isaac Newton. A huge difference in numbers exists with males dominating the charts for centuries. This is because women are brought up to maintain an altered version of reality than men. When that perception was transformed and acknowledged the female geniuses within society, females are still faced with the choice of which form of genius to pursue, a genius holding the power of knowledge or a genius of character. The lack of female geniuses has little to do with the compass of the female mind, but rather predominantly due to the definition of genius, that holds a bias towards men.
Sandra Upson asks, "Where are all the female geniuses?" but perhaps the more important question is why are they not geniuses? Intentionally or unintentionally, since childhood women have been constraint to only serving others, while men have been pressurized to think critically. Women were taught to be the damsel in distress who waits for a knight in shining armor, while men were taught to conquer the dragon. Currently, the toy catalogs one receives annually just in time for Christmas continue to have divided section. There are toys tailored specifically for a young girl or toys personalized especially for a young boy. The girls' sections were always filled with plastic versions of kitchen appliances, housecleaning equipment, and baby day-care sets. The boys' sections of catalogs have been occupied with toys that embrace a creative mindset with boxes of train tracks, tools to build with, and Legos, all toys nurturing future engineers. Women have always been expected to fulfill the role of homemaker and does not do work outside of the home, while the men have been imposed with the role of the breadwinner or the creator. Society is caught up in the allusion that gender advocates how a person should be, not how a person is.
