Charles Drew


            
            
             Charles Richard Drew was born on June 3, 1904 in Washington D. Drew) was a carpet layer and his mother (Nora Burrell Drew) was a school teacher. As a student he was very athletic and excelled in academics. In 1922 he graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School with medals from his junior and senior years for his athletic achievements. Later on he graduated in 1926 from Amherst College in western Massachusetts. .
             Then he decided that he wanted to go into medicine, so he decided to accept a job at Morgan State College as a professor of chemistry and biology. In 1928 with enough money saved up from the job as a professor, he was finally able to attend medical school. Later he was accepted to McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Charles Drew soon graduated from there in 1933. He was top five in his class. He became an assistant surgeon at Freedmen's Hospital in Washington D.C. This is when he devoted his research to studying blood transfusions and the storing of blood. During his research he discovered that plasma which is the liquid portion of the blood that does not contain cells, could be dried and stored for an extended period of time without deteriorating. This is what made Charles Drew famous his discovery about blood.
             On April 2, 1950 he died in car accident because he fell asleep behind the wheel of the car. He left behind a legacy of life saving techniques that benefit us today. Now he has schools named after him because of his contributions to the medical field. He also has blood banks named after him too. .
