They thought they were saving the Native Americans from themselves and their savage ways not that the natives were lost to all goodness, but rather, that they would be grateful once they had had the opportunity to mend their ways under English governance. (Townsend 37). In their minds the only reason the colony had not fallen apart was god's will God had saved the colony over and over for a reason, as a sign to them of what he wanted: let the miserable condition of these naked slaves of the divell move you to compassion.(Townsend 112). When John Rolfe was asked why he wanted so much to marry Pocahontas and make her a Christian woman his only reply was shall I be so unnatural not to gyve bread to the hungry, or soe uncharitable not to Cover the naked?( Townsend 116) John saw Pocahontas as someone who wanted to save from her barbarian way, and he would do that by marrying her and making her a proper baptized Christian woman. When the English made the Native Americans choose to leave their religion and adopt Christianity the native religions died out with less and less people to continue to practice them. When they couldn't convert older members of the tribe they would hound the children, children being more naive or open minded would sometimes convert and with that there goes part of the future of a native tribe. They didnt not recognize the Native Americans spiritual beliefs as a proper religion this is made known by the face they changed their names once they had agreed to adopt Christianity as their religion either to save themselves from death or to save others. This is made clear when Pocahontas married John Rolfe and was given the new Christian name of Rebecca. When Pocahontas was brought to England she was made to wear clothes that were proper in English society, because to them most Native Americans were portrayed and blood thirsty savages. Pocahontas was used to sell the colony of Virginia not as a person but as a piece of prime advertisement.
