Phenomenological - A Method of Religion

Bettis (1969 : 30) The purpose of phenomenology study is not to show the superiority or inferiority of one religion over others. Neither is it to show all religion is basically similar.
The phenomenological principle is the one should not judge a person or a group of people until one have acquired proper understanding of their way of doing things by spending some time studying them. Getting inside one's religion in order to have a proper view that's proper and free from all kinds of biases and all prejudice.
The phenomenologist of religion begins by performing epoche, which is suspending his or her previous thoughts, ideologies, opinions or belief. He should observe the phenomena as it appears rather than as they are understood through certain opinions formulated prior to observation. When this method of applying epoche is followed through and through, the results can be favourable because all biases will be cleared up and the attainment of actual and real results observed. In most instances epoche is rather impractical because there is no one with the standard of measure. Cox ( 1996 : 28) Moreover, even though the observers endeavours to suspend all previous judgements, this is probably impossible since each person brings with him cultural, social and psychological understanding, which are in part hidden to his own consciousness. It's very normal that cultural bias, views and experience can highly influence the outcome of the study.
The phenomenologist should enter into the experience of the believing community and be able to view the world just as the believer does. This second stage is performing empathetic interpolation, it is essential in that it limits distortion of the phenomena in order for it to be clarified and understood. However, getting inside a religion is not easy. Barriers of culture, language and unexplained symbols may make the task extremely difficult. This is the main reason of the observer to employ empathy in order to be able to feel for the religious life of a given community ( Cox : 29).
